Irctc tatkal is a scheme introduced by Indian railways for the passengers who are in urgent requirement of last minute travelling. Under Irctc tatkal, passengers who are unable to secure reservation are provided with irctc tatkal booking facility where on payment of some premium charges passengers are provided with the tickets on first come first served basis. The irctc tatkal booking is based on first come first served in all classes except First AC and Executive class. The irctc tatkal ticket charges are in addition to normal fare which is applicable for both peak and lean periods. The irctc tatkal booking of tickets can be done atleast five days in advance of the date of actual journey. The irctc tatkal booking of tickets from source station to destination station can only be booked. For the irctc tatkal booking from remote station to destination with boarding facility can be booked from intermediate station using Tatkal Quota.
The irctc tatkal seat availability should be checked by any passenger before booking for Tatkal Quota. The irctc tatkal E-tickets can be booked two days in advance in which date of journey is not included. The irctc tatkal seat availability can be checked by passengers either online or enquired from Railway counters. The irctc tatkal seat availability becomes difficult during peak season and hours as the tatkal quota gets occupied very quickly.

Other irctc tatkal rules are that the tickets cannot be modified either according to irctc tatkal seat availability or any other form under irctc tatkal.
Incase of cancellation of tickets by passengers, a flat refund of 25% excluding the tatkal charges is allowed on the total fare charged on the tickets which is applicable on cancellation upto 24 hours.
No refund will be allowed incase of tickets cancelled within 24 hours of scheduled departure of train.
For all other cancellations such as contingent cancellation and waitlisted cancellation amount will be deducted according to the irctc tatkal rules set by the Railway authorities.
According to irctc tatkal rules Tatkal Quota for some trains, class or locations may not be available for online irctc tatkal booking.
